Judy Akka's Life: A Reverie

Judy Akka’s early childhood was in the ethereal hills of Munnar. She was the first grandchild, cherished on both sides of the family. Her thirst for wisdom drew her from the cradle of the mountains to the plains below, to Marthandam, where her knowledge blossomed under the gentle care of our grandmother, and the support of good hearted uncles and aunt. Her relentless pursuit of knowledge and systematic learning inspired her siblings to follow in her footsteps.

Judy Akka (Linda) excelled in every area of learning, a constant star in the academic skies. Her path was one of books, and her mind a garden adorned with knowledge. A scholar and a writer, her light shines through the books she authored and in the hearts she touched. She held a deep love for the words of poets long gone, both in Tamil and English.

Married to a kindred spirit, whose intellect matched her own, together they built a world of words. To her son, she gave her all—her heart’s devotion, pure and true.

To us, her siblings, she was a patient listener, a rare gift that is hard to find. She stood like a firm pillar, speaking few words, yet filled with a strength that, though unseen, was felt by all who knew her.

I (Paapa) vividly remember when I was undergoing treatment at RCC, how she flew to Trivandrum and expressed her heartfelt desire to cut her hair to make a wig for me. This gesture remains strong in my memory. Little did I know then that I would one day be writing a requiem for my beloved Akka.
Later, during my visit to Bangalore with Abitha and the children, the moments we shared with her became even more precious, leaving a lasting impression on all of us.

But now, the silence holds her name. In quiet nights, we still yearn for her presence, to share life with her, to speak, to listen.

Though Judy Akka’s voice is stilled, her presence remains, in every thought and every memory we share. Her memory guides us with the wisdom of her silence. We hold her close within our hearts and minds—as wife, mother, sister, teacher, administrator, and friend.

She now rests in peace, but leaves behind a light that will never fade. Judy Akka, who held such high command in life, in career, in love, and in every way, now rests where beauty knows no decay, in a world where night is brighter than day. In our hearts, she shall never fade, but will remain in our memory as a brilliant mind and a gentle soul.

Hard to forget... Oh, it’s too hard to forget.

In the words of Jack Thorne:
"Those we love never truly leave us. There are things that death cannot touch."

  1. Dear Mam,

Your tribute to Judy Akka is truly moving and beautifully captures the essence of her life and spirit. Reading your words, I can feel the deep love and respect you have for her, and the profound impact she had on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

I was touched by the memory you shared of her offering to cut her hair for you. It’s a powerful reminder of the selfless love she had for her family, and it speaks volumes about the kind of person she was — someone who gave freely and fully of herself.

Even though her physical presence is no longer with us, the light she brought into the world continues to shine brightly through the memories and love you hold in your heart. In every cherished memory, your Judy Akka remains close.

My thoughts are with you as you honour her memory on this first anniversary of her passing.

May her beloved soul rest in peace! 🙏
