A Journey of Wonders : from my diary

From the Southern Tip to the Heart of India

Many years ago, I embarked on a journey that still fills me with wonder, both for the audacity of it and the incredible memories it gave me. At the time, I was leading a class of literature students in the southernmost tip of India, in a small town called Nagercoil. One day, the students came to me with an idea—an ambitious request, really. They wanted to explore India’s capital, Delhi, and some of its neighbouring treasures. Without hesitation, I agreed, even though I had three young children of my own.

I had always believed in the power of travel to shape minds, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to give them a chance to experience the beauty of India’s culture and history firsthand. So, with a sense of adventure, I made all the arrangements through well-wishers in Delhi. The plan was set: we would take a long train journey from Nagercoil to Trivandrum,  through Chennai to Delhi, and before returning, visit the iconic landmarks of northern India.

In Chennai,  we had a great time exploring Marina Beach and Golden Beach. The journey from there  to Delhi was as exciting as it was challenging. The students and my children had a blast, and we found ourselves in awe of the places we visited.

One of the most memorable moments was the elephant ride in Jaipur. There’s something magical about slowly ascending to the top of the Amber Fort, sitting high on an elephant’s back, surrounded by the splendour of Rajasthan’s rugged landscape. It was as though we had stepped back in time, to the royal history of the land.

At Agra, we stood before the majestic Taj Mahal. Walking around this awe-inspiring monument, we admired the sheer beauty of the white marble, the intricate carvings, and the incredible love story it represented. The experience was almost surreal.

In Delhi, our itinerary was packed with iconic sights. We marvelled at the architectural brilliance of the Lotus Temple, which stands as a symbol of peace and unity, and roamed through the grandeur of the Red Fort, and the towering Qutub Minar. The drive down Rajpath was an experience in itself. We marveled at the imposing India Gate, explored the bustling markets and had a taste of Delhi's lively culture. Visiting the city’s most iconic landmarks, each with its own story and significance, was  simply amazing.

Throughout the journey, the enthusiasm of my students kept me going. Looking back, I still wonder how I managed to pull off such a feat. Though it was a monumental challenge,  the experience turned out to be a whirlwind of discovery, joy, and deep learning.

That journey, more than three decades ago, remains one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. It taught me the power of adventure, the joy of discovery, and the importance of trusting in both others and myself.

As I reminisce, I realize how daring and bold that decision was!

Perhaps,  those days,  I was made of sterner stuff ...
