The Mule Speaks

[A favourite of mine is "Balaam's Donkey"

For I often identify myself with this donkey. ]

   Balaam's Donkey Speaks

On a dusty road, in the heat of day,
Balaam rode his donkey on his way,
But little did he know what lay ahead,
And the conversation that would soon be said.

For an angel of the Lord stood in their way,
To stop them in their tracks and make them stay,
Balaam's donkey saw what he could not,
And she turned aside and refused to move.

Balaam, enraged, struck the donkey hard,
But she spoke up then, in a voice so marred,
"Why have you hit me? What have I done?"
Balaam was stunned, for he heard her tongue.

The donkey spoke of her faithfulness and care,
And how Balaam had treated her so unfair,
The Lord had spared her life and given her voice,
To speak to her master, to make the right choice.

And Balaam realized then, with deep regret,
That he had been blind, but now could see,
He had a choice to make, to follow God's way,
And he knew his donkey had saved him that day.

So let us listen closely to what God may say,
And not be blinded by our own foolish way,
For even a donkey can speak His truth,
And lead us towards the right choice.
